Summer on the tip of our tongues...

Hello, everyone! Summer is so close I cannot believe it--I go to school tomorrow for a full day, then only a half day on Wednesday, then summer vacation is here! I can't wait to start reading all of the books on my list, swim in my backyard everyday, thrift like nobody's business, attend a Ditty Bops concert... This is going to be the summer of the century for me, kids. Here's a few of my personal Dear Diary Moments that I look forward to completing later this summer, amidst some amazingly inspirational Audrey Kitching videos...

**Summer** Dear Diary Moments;;

**Read some of my favorite books: Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carrol, The Weetzie Bat Books & Necklace of Kisses by Francesca Lia Block, Hipocrite in a White Pouffy Dress by Susan Gilman, anything by Keri Smith, Moonlight Chronicles by Daniel Price, Popism: The Warhol Sixties by Andy Warhol & Pat Hackett, Art & Soul by Pam Grout, The Creative Companion by SARK, & Tuck Everlasting by Natalie Babbit.

**Devote an entire week to wear a single pair of stripey knee-socks with every outfit! Bonus points for chewing bubblegum.

**Spend more time outside. Camp. Read in trees. Swim with a friend. Sketch in the woods. Or as SARK suggests, 'take miracle walks;' walk through nature and purposefully look for things that make life more magic. Look for nature's miracles. Don't forget to catch fireflies.

**Start becoming more comfortable with who you are. Develop your own niche in the music world, make mixtapes of your taste for your friends, start a major collection of crazy clothes that fit your personality & practice wearing them before next semester. Stop paying so much attention to mirrors, but instead the memories that you could be making, minus insecurity.

xoxo & summer wishes, SPRINKLE

As Smart As Geek Is Chic Right Now

"And they were as smart as geek is chic right now, and as clever as the invention of pillowcases..." -As Smart As Geek Is Chic Right Now by Say Hi To Your Mom

Two words, bloggettes. Geek Chic. At this point in the fashion world, if you haven't heard of this phenomenon, you've probably been living under a rock. No offense to be taken, but its everywhere! Everywhere from indie films & fashion to the mainstream catwalks, (Luella Spring Summer '08, anyone?), fashionistas and everyday chicas are nerding out. It's suddenly become adorable to embrace your inner geek-dom. I'm not exactly sure how I feel about this, because it creates the high possibility, (and almost guarantee), of poseur-ism. For example, girls everywhere creating fake versions of themselves to appear as absolutely dorky as possible.

But one thing is for sure--The idea that being who you are, no matter how absolutely ridiculously weird that is, and being accepted for it? Fantastic! Count me in! Incorporating those unique characteristics into a quirky wardrobe? Holy Cow, YES ! (Yes, I just said 'Holy Cow.')
Now, here's my personal suggestions for embracing your inner nerd, whichever type you may be! I've outlined the basics; The History Geek, The Literature Geek, The Science Geek, The Mathematics Geek, The Band Geek, and The Art Geek (me!). But alas, there are many more. Trekkies, Star Wars fans (holla!), people-so-obsessed-with-their-music-its-fantastic, Political Geeks, and Foreign Language Geeks... SO many I can't even begin to list! Show me your nerdaliciousness, via Polyvore.com or any media! Even photograph your outfits, tell me what you think, & here's a challenge: except the flaws that make you amazing. Also, err, could we please bring the term "nerdalicious" into popularity? Thanks.

The History Geek

As Alexandraa reached into her leather knapsack, she fingered through the various letters and postcards she'd found at her local flea market... She was fascinated with the thoughts and relationships of those who previously wrote them--their lives left behind with only ghostly writing to tell their stories... She adjusted her glasses and yanked her striped socks up to her knees, then straightened the laces on her moccasin boots. They were made almost identically to those of previous eras... Checking the time on her golden antique pocketwatch, she rolled the smooth stone of the ancient arrowheads resting in her bermuda pockets between her fingers, & let her mind drift through history... Fabulous.

The Literature Geek

Ophelia squinted through her cat-eye glasses to read the beautifully written words of Breakfast at Tiffany's, a coveted 1st edition she had gotten from her uncle. Wiping away a teeny drop of sweat, she removed her beige cardigan and lay it out like a quilt under the big oak tree. She sat down in the shade and drew her floral, Doc Martin-clad feet underneath her airy Victorian dress... Taking a deep breath, she plunged into the pages of her favorite novel, reading it for the fifth time that summer, and recording her favorite quotes with a feather quill...

The Scientific Geek

Edie carefully measured out exactly 32 milliliters of Formaldehyde into the beaker and popped a bubble with her gum. Measuring the length of the reptile lying in front of her, she grinned at the disgusted squeels of her lab partner. Rolling her eyes, she pushed her oversized glasses back into place & recorded her observations into her journal. Following the specific procedure written on her blue plaid clipboard, she blocked out the fake-gagging noises of her annoyed assistant with the sweet sound of M.I.A.'s Paper Planes exploding from her earbuds...

The Mathematical Geek

Diablo grinned and tapped her grey-ribbon tennishoes quickly on the basket of the desk in front of her as she solved her next equation. The dude seated one chair ahead glared back at her as his desk bounced up and down. Ignoring him, she continued on. Her lucky pink glasses were certainly helping her today... She jabbed the equation 'xy+578.95 to the fifth power' into her purple gelly calculator and waited for the answer she had already calculated in her head. YES! Correct again. Grinding her geometrical pencil into the mini sharpener resting in the pocket of her black Alexander Wang playsuit, she glanced at the turquoise watch on her wrist: Fifteen minutes. "Its Go-Time!" she thought to herself...

The Classic Band Geek

Wynnifer laughed when her alarm went off the moment she scurried out the door. Blinking at the bright summer sun through her tortoise-shell eyeglasses, she sighed. While most teenagers were still asleep or watching cartoons as they ate their soggy fruit loops, she was on her way to band practice--again. She woke up early every single morning and drove to her highschool, where she marched all afternoon and instructed the freshman on how to properly play their instruments. Sipping the warm coffee from her Starbucks cup, she sang her choir solo & pictured the sheet music of her trumpet piece in her mind... A small drop of vanilla latte dribbled down onto her seafoam boxer shorts and she giggled at her outfit--her Markus Lupfer Sequin-Bodice sweater, seafoam boxers from K-Mart's Bargain Bin, & music print socks from Hot Topic. Oops, no shoes. As she walked into the school and slumped against the band hallway walls, she pulled out her MacBook Air and slid in a mixtape shaped flashdrive--She typed away and completed her college applications as she waited for her busy day to start...

The Artistic Geek

Mitzie nibbled on the chocolate mocha chip cupcake sitting on her mouse-print lunch box as she observed her work of art so far... While her piece had begun to gather an interesting appearance, it still lacked something, something more Andy Warhol-esque... "POP!" she shouted, spatting tiny flakes of icing from her bubblegum lips. "I need some more Pop Art..." She looked at the aligned photobooth strips and cocked her head to the side, peering at her work through her baby pink plastic glasses... She grabbed her scissors from the pockets of her altered hippie skirt and began hacking into the plastic film. Cutting it into maniacal, uneven shapes, she hummed the tune of Barry Louis Polysar's "All I Want Is You..." Her feather earrings dangled from her pale ears & she glued the newly cut photostrips onto the cardboard. Stepping back from her work, she grinned at the finished product: The pieces of self portraiture had formed the shape of a giant peace sign... "Groooovy," she breathed quietly to herself...

I hope you enjoyed. And in the words of Star Trek, "Live Long & Prosper..." Or, if you're a Star Wars fan, like moi, May the force be with you.

Please just take me back to the Sixties...

I just finished watching Across the Universe, for the fifth time. I'm absolutely in love. I'm drunk of the magic of the Sixties. Something about it has always drawn me in, made me feel so passionate about it... I love the world I live in today, even with its flaws, but I miss the 60s. I wish I could've been alive. Those close to me know that I'm an absolutely geek with the 1960s pop culture. I've got Beatles songs and Bob Dylan floating through my head, peace signs on my wrists, (before it was fashionable), protest signs in my room, and Andy Warhol in my locker... We're studying the Sixties in history class right now, and I can't get enough. I try to answer every question I can and I take notes so focused and listen to every word our teacher says... I don't believe in reincarnation, just as a personal opinion, but I think part of my heart is somewhere at Woodstock...
Andy Warhol once said, "I don't know where the artificial stops and the real starts..." This is such a powerful message. The years he thrived in were the years of such serious matters, i.e. the Vietnam War, Civil Rights Movement, drugs, protests, bombs... But it was also such an explosion of culture, with the hippies, the pop art, the beginning of major idolism via movie stars, etc. Especially in his story. There was just so. much. going. on. The youth were participating and having freedoms and voice like never before. Art was being explored. Drugs were being taken. Battles were being fought. Rights were being won... It just amazes me.
I'd like to leave you with some of my favorite videos that just capture the whole point I'm trying to get across. I hope you can feel it like I do. (PS-I have no biases towards the Vietnam War/other issues: I wasn't alive. Please don't take offense!)
