Sometimes, Life is Poetry.

Sometimes life is poetry. Sometimes through the every day madness, the laughs, tears, screams, fights, and coffee stains on starched white shirts, the planets align in your favor and for just a moment, all is perfect. Maybe it's a smiling face whose simple greeting makes you feel like you're flying, or maybe for you, it's just a spectacular day. Sometimes there are moments in our mundane nine-to-five's that elevate our spirits to unthinkable highs--moments that make you stop and stare at the white puffy clouds smeared like cotton candy across an electric blue sky & ask with a smile, "Why me?" Unheard-of happiness, where every second seems electric, & the quick beating of your heart becomes a regular occurrence. Moments that make all of those wishes at 11:11 seem so worthwhile. And sometimes these things can happen; these fairy tales can literally become a reality. Sometimes you can look out at the swarms of familiar people surrounding you in a high school hallway and clutch your books tighter against your chest, feeling more happy and at home than ever before. Sometimes, life is poetry.

Homecoming Weekend: 2009 Sophomore Year

Hello everyone! Like I said, Homecoming was absolutely amazing last weekend. I spent Friday night in Pep Assemblies, the parade in my Art Honors float, and at the football game, and then spent Saturday morning with my aunt getting my nails painted sparkly pink. Then my fabulous mom & I spent two hours curling my hair into Shirley Temple locks... Ohlala! That night, my best friends and I met up at Courtney's house for photos, then drove to the most beautiful Italian restaurant, & after dinner we danced the night away! It was so fantastic. I love you all, I have the best friends ever!

Freak-Out-Free Homecoming!

image from LIFE Magazine, found here.
Hello, all! I'm not exactly sure if any of you are even highschool aged, like moi, but for those of you that are, Homecoming is approaching! For those of you outside the U.S., Homecoming is defined by Wikipedia as follows:
The Homecoming Dance – usually the culminating event of the week (for high schools) – is a formal or informal event, either at the school or an off-campus location. The venue is decorated, and either a disc jockey or band is hired to play music. In many ways, it is a fall prom. Homecoming dances could be informal as well just like standard school dances. At high schools, the homecoming dances are sometimes held in the high school gymnasium.
At high school, some teens attend the dance with dates and some attend in groups. Going to homecoming with friends is a relatively new trend.

Ultimately, Homecoming is the kick-off of Fall Sports and a celebration consisting of a parade through the town, a football game or other sporting event, & the Homecoming Dance, which is like a ball, I suppose. Its a blast! All of the different clubs & school groups get their own floats in the parade, & I get to ride on the Art Honors float tomorrow afternoon, after our Pep Assembly. We've had a Spirit Week all week long, in which we have a theme each day that we dress up to! All of this to build excitement for the football game! & On Saturday I'll be getting all dolled up for the Homecoming Dance, which is the entire purpose of this post. Now, about the dance...

Dances like Homecoming, Courtwarming, Prom, etc. are such an excellent excuse to wear pastel taffeta, chiffon, tulle, petticoats, & girly accessories, I absolutely adore them! But something that's extremely important to me, personally, is sticking out in the crowd.. When dress shopping at Macy's & Bloomingdale's, my mom & I dug through rack after rack of the same old thing; boring, super short dresses with absolutely nothing unique about them! Finally, we ended up trekking out to a lovely vintage dress stores, & being that we were the only customers in the store, the owner actually picked out tons of dresses for me to try on, & I found the perfect black strapless number with tons of ruffles! (Pictures after the dance!) My best friends & date are going to meet at Courtney's house for pictures, head to dinner, & then dance the night away... Enough about me, though! Here are my suggestions for those of you experiencing something a little like this to make sure your night is memorable, artsy, & freak-out-free!
**Think outside the box when it comes to what to wear! Shop vintage; Find an old 1950's prom dress or a 1980's sequined explosion. Dare to be different. Pair it with messy hair, flower crowns, costume jewelry, pearls, saddle oxford shoes, Converse tennies, moccasins, (my choice for the evening!), & vintage gloves.
**When taking pictures, think of something new. Sure, classic Kodak moments of awkward couples are priceless, no doubt, but what about making it into an extravagent photoshoot? Surely one of your friends is an aspiring photographer? Or set the self timer & go nuts! Even better--find a photobooth somewhere. I am obsessed with these.
**Go with a big group of friends, or better yet, go single! Going single is so underrated, you get to dance with whomever you'd like & party the night away! (But this year I have a date, which is just as fun!)
**Make fun plans afterwards, depending on how late you plan on partying. Unfortunately, this year I have lots of stuff happening on Sunday, so I won't be able to do this, but sleepovers are the best. Plan on going out for coffee & icecream after, going dancing, or even thrifting! For some reason bowling came to mind; who knows? You're already all dolled up, why waste that on one event?!
**DANCE! I used to be the one in the corner socializing with the punch bowl, but after a recent party experience, I am a huge dance advocate. Seriously, its a blast. We spent the whole night dancing away, not a care in the world, & it was epic. Epic. Go for it; Just feel the music! If you worry too much about what you look like, you won't have any fun.
**“Sing like no one's listening, love like you've never been hurt, dance like nobody's watching, and live like its heaven on earth.” -Mark Twain. This quote reminds me of Ellen DeGeneres.

The most important thing to remember about these dances is to stop the drama. Nights like these are about living it up & accepting yourself how you are, no matter your insecurities, & feeling like a princess. Dance, laugh, hug, pose, kiss, hug, waltz, smile, & remember. Highschool is all about what you make it--if you make it all about popularity & social hierarchy, that's how you'll forever remember it. But if you laugh it all off & make these years the best years of your life, you can create memories you'll never forget. So what are you waiting for? Grab your tiara, curl your hair, & get ready to boogie!

Autumn.

i love this feeling. the feeling that fall brings as the cool fog begins to settle on your windowsills,
once lush green leaves now crunching orange beneath your buckled boots... the feeling of pretty lace dresses against cold skin on the eve of homecoming, warm coffee cups in glove-encased fingertips, sketching with friends after school.
the feeling that comes this time of year, of pumpkins, hot cocoa, scarves, cider, wishing for christmas kisses. the anticipation of winter.late night writing and talks with best friends till the early hours of morning, laptops lighting up an otherwise sleeping room.
holes in cardigans worn to the bone, shivers in math class, counting the seconds until school is released each day. staring at boys & wishing to share their sweaters. running to the nearest coffeeshop with giggling girls each day.
i love the feeling of absolute magic that rests in the air, as windows wide open let in chilly autumn dreams. waking up with floral pillowcases stained from purple hair dye, remembering some dreams but mostly forgetting.
i love the feeling of crying just a little bit, because everything is so perfect & yet there's just
so few things you would change, if only you could...
autumn is about crisp new starts & beginnings, about opportunity, snuggling, & friendship. about memories and apple print pajama pants, chapped pink lips & pale skin. camera timers flashing as you capture your thoughts for the day. dancing between seasons.
i love it all.

Sucrerie Magazine: Masquerade.

Hello everyone! Thanks for all the great feedback on my last post, it really meant a lot that so many of you thought so much of my writing. Honestly! I have some exciting news! My article was published in the latest issue of Sucrerie Magazine! Hooray! :) Its called 'Masquerade,' & I'd really love it if you all could hop on over there & read it & then comment back here and tell me what you think! :) My only complaint is that they made it look rather dark & gothic, versus the normal light pinks & girly frills that Sucrerie usually offers... I even gave them a photo to use, but they used that grim looking picture instead... Oh well! I'm very honored to have been included in this publication--its all very surreal! I get to conduct a Skype interview with three very talented girls from New York next week for the latest article of Style Sample, & yet all of this seems so crazy. Thank you, thank you, thank you for reading my blog and giving me support, as always. You are all the best.
Stories about my fabulous weekend are coming soon!

Let it Happen, Love.

(Geek Chic Necklace available in my etsy; 6 AM, photo by me.)
To all the boys out there—be careful. There are girls in this world who wear their hearts on their sleeves, & they will love you. You are beautiful, every one of you. Sure, it may seem funny to you, but everything you do suddenly becomes like magic. For every boy out there, there is a girl who is madly, deeply, truly in love. Head-over-heels, leaning against a pale blue locker, & watching you run your rough hands through your tangled hair. Try not to break her heart. Think about what you say before you say it, & think about the hearts around your initials that may be resting on her binders & folders in shaky cursive ink. That single awkward grin in the hallway meant more to her than you could possibly imagine. You are everything to her, if only for a few weeks of a crush, but to her, the world rests on your shoulders. Just be careful with her heart.

To all you girls—it is okay. We all know how it feels, to laugh, giggle, dream, & become unable to remove his face from your thoughts; how suddenly every love song on the radio feels like its being sung for you. We know how it feels to lay on your bedroom floor with tear-soaked eyes, angry, heartbroken, & rejected. But do not fret, for you are beautiful. You, whether or not you it may occur to you, are so beautiful & talented, it takes my breath away. You are precious. Get up, look in the mirror, & realize how gorgeous you are, blemishes and all. He may seem like everything, but he is just a boy. You are fabulous, & no one deserves to step on your heart. Just remember that. Now go get ‘em, darling—shoot for the stars.
(St Louie, photo by me)
To all of you watching, let it happen. They are meant to be together. He’ll braid her hair and she’ll laugh at his jokes, and in the end, they can drive away together in their beat-up Mercedes with a bouquet of daisies & a wedding dress. This is magic; this is love. Let it happen. For someday, it will be you.

“Baby, you don't even know me
But one day I'll get up the courage as you pass by You'll see
Oh baby, one look just might save me
I need you to slow by the corner, stop right in front of me

…How do I know why the sight of you makes me weak
Each time I see you turn on to my street.”
-Vegetable Car by Joshua Radin.
